em dash is a free creative writing studio for young people hosted on the Surf Coast by local writer Duncan Strachan.
We get together at Mavis Mavis cafe in Torquay on Tuesdays to hone our storytelling skills, confidence, craft and arts practice.
All are welcome — avid readers, YA writers, kooks and those with bad grades.
We gather at Mavis Mavis on Tuesdays and hang out for roughly 2 hours.
During a session we'll do some of the below:
writing prompts
chat about craft and storytelling
visualisations
take moments to share writing with the group if you're feeling up to it
grammar sessions (trust me, this is the best — learn the rules then break em)
participate in artist talks and demonstrations by local and Melbourne-based artists
take a brake to enjoy some provided snacks
and there'll be more
Each session is themed and will build on the core tenants of a writing life — confidence, craft and practice.
Once we've established ourselves and have a better sense of the needs of the group we'll add more activities to this list.
While most of em dash's expertise lies in the written word, we are also interested in broadening the scope of the group to include other art practices.
Ultimately where there is artistic motivation, we're here to nurture it.
em dash writing co is the brain child of Surf Coast based writer-editor-barista Duncan Strachan.
Duncan has published with The Big Issue, Kill Your Darlings, Pure Slush and Susperia among others.
As a trained writer with an enormous passion for storytelling and the arts, Duncan is interested in offering what he knows to those who might find it useful.
em dash is hosted on Tuesdays during term from 5pm - 7pm beginning 16.7.24.
It's open to high-school aged people living on the Surf Coast.
It's free of charge.
Just bring a writing implement — pen and paper, iPad, laptop, grandma's typewriter, etc.
